For one thing, it’s about a house with a goddamned clock in its walls! And not just any clock, but a doomsday clock that, when it goes off, will bring about the end of the world. THwaCiIW is a Gothic horror novel for kids, and it’s genuinely spooky. And it’s only appropriate that Rebekah should have given me a horror novel, because my nickname for her is “Ghost Mouth.” (Thanks, Ghost Mouth!) I got my current copy of THwaCiIW from my friend Rebekah, last November, at her Friendsgiving party. And it’s through these novels, I think, that I first learned about Edward Gorey. Actually, I first read John Bellairs’s novel The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn (1978), which I picked it up because of its Gorey cover and illustrations. I first read this novel when I was a kid, checking it out from the library. ![]()

![]() Through this remarkable story Gareth Russell depicts a compelling yet awful world, and explains in thrilling detail how Howard's short life ended with the incarceration of half her family, many of her servants and the executions of her alleged lover, her secretary, her favourite lady in waiting, and the queen herself. She and her allies went through almost every possible state – a household in formation, a household at court, a household on tour, and a household in crisis. In its sixteen month existence between her marriage to Henry VIII in July 1540 and her arrest in November 1541, Catherine Howard's household showcased the Tudor monarchy in microcosm: how royal favour was won, granted, exercised, displayed, celebrated and betrayed. ![]() ![]() ![]() Based on fascinating new material, a riveting account of Catherine Howard's tragic marriage to one of history's most powerful and endlessly fascinating rulers – Henry VIII. ![]() ![]() If you're a fan, I can't recommend it enough! All these Faustian dealings in comic book form were a real and welcome treat and a fantastic companion to the whole Hellraiser universe. The visuals in these graphic novels can be haunting, and the stories are grim and frightening. Same goes for the artwork.Ĭlive Barker is a visual artist as well as a writer, and I think those that took on his work fully understood that. Some stories are better than others, but I enjoyed all of them to varying degrees. Thankfully, the graphic short stories arrived, done by new writers and artists (with Clive Barker's blessing) who imagined their own tales of the Cenobites and Lemerchand Boxes, ranging from the crusades through to the modern day to even the distant future. I remember really wanting to know more about this entire world that Barker had dreamed up. There was also lots of talk of the Lemerchand Puzzle Box and made clear that it was steeped in mystery and history. Then as the movie sequels went on I liked them less and less until I got downright sick of it all (didn't we all?).īut the first two movies really grabbed my attention, as did Pinhead and the 'Cenobites'. So, I absolutely LOVED the film 'Hellraiser', Clive Barker's directorial masterpiece. ![]() ![]() ![]() *This review applies to both Volume 1 & Volume 2 of 'Hellraiser: Collected Best'. ![]() ![]() ![]() "30th Annual Lambda Literary Award Finalists Announced". ^ a b "The Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction".Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction Independent Publisher Book Award for LGBT+ Fiction Awards for Marriage of a Thousand Lies Year Marriage of a Thousand Lies received positive reviews from Booklist, Lambda Literary Foundation, Publishers Weekly, Toronto Star, Ms., Paste, Los Angeles Review of Books, International Examiner, and Autostraddle. The research team studied cores taken from the seafloor that included evidence of preserved microscopic shells from plankton. Paleontologists and ocean scientists teamed up to study the impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone during previous ancient warming events in order to predict how the habitat may respond in the future due to global warming. And if greenhouse gas emissions continue, the researchers estimate that the ocean region’s life could be severely depleted within 150 years - and recovery may not be possible for thousands of years. New research warns that the climate crisis could reduce life in the twilight zone between 20% and 40% by the end of the century.
